Quite gripping really, you feel for the poor little chap and cute dog. Anton as Jamie Hayes. Psychoanalysis of the father-son relationship behind the camera is impossible to avoid, but did you notice Dad got to meet a woman thanks to his son’s hardships? God does not exist. The film ends with Dirkie unconscious in his father’s arms, together with his little dog still alert , both being carried back to the vehicle his father had travelled there in. Dirkie (aka Lost in the Desert)
While ‘Lost in the Desert’ was a mere ‘support’ to the main feature ‘The Flight of the Doves’- mum having brought myself and my sisters to see the dirkif in ‘Dirkie’ blew us away! This page was last edited on 27 Januaryat Retrieved 12 September Yes No Report this.
An Englishman with a grudge against an insurance company for a disallowed claim fakes his own death in order but an insurance investigator starts snooping around.
Trivia Apart from the practical difficulties associated with filming in the desert, what made this movie even more of a feat was that it was filmed twice; once in Afrikaans and once in English. The story switches several times to Dirkie’s father Anton DeVries played by the director Jamie Uys, credited as Jamie Hayes and follows his increasingly desperate efforts to locate his son, including having a couple of million leaflets specially printed and spread over the desert from a plane, containing instructions for Dirkie on how to survive in the desert, and assuring him that his father loves him and won’t give up trying to rescue him.

One German web site also credits Gilbert Gibson as another composer for the film. The English version is about 70 minutes long, and the Afrikaans version rather shorter. Lead actor Wynand Uys did not act again. The plane carrying the boy crashes; he is lost in the Namib Desert together with his dog. This is full on nihilism. He spends the majority of the film cowering from hyenas and plummeting into chasms and screaming as poisonous reptiles spit in his face.
If it was damaged or Uys was unhappy with a scene, the whole production team had to trek back and reshoot; prolonging production and wrecking the budget. I suspect Jamie Uys is a more attentive dad in reality, though he may also be the type to push his kid over a waterfall were the boy too afraid to jump which he basically does throughout the entire runtime of the film.
Furthermore Jamie Uys suffered from a unique medical condition.
As a terrier owner, I’m possibly biased, but Lady Frolic of Belvedale is the greatest K-9 actor ever. I felt genuinely afraid for this child during the movie. When a dune shot towering things in the Namib demanded a retake a different virgin dune without inerasable footprints had to be found. Cast a Dark Shadow The film was released on DVD in One thing I learned from Brian De Palma is that you should never criticize a movie for being effective – dirki I found this nearly impossible to watch let alone enjoy for the scenes of realistic peril and emotional distress inflicted on poor Dirkie throughout his adventure in the desert.
